When I scheduled an appointment with Discovery Pediatrics after my baby was born, I was given an appointment right away.  The office staff was pleasant and made us feel at ease.  I was, however, quite disappointed with Dr. Gitterman.  I found him to lack professionalism from the moment he rushed us to show him our documents from the hospital.  In addition, he demonstrated a lack of respect to a family member, who was also present, by using mean-spirited jokes to deter this family member from providing additional (useful) information at the start of our visit.  He made remarks such as... 'why don't you pick the color of the tape that we can shut your mouth with' and 'why don't you drive around the block a few times and come back'.  When I expressed that I was offended by his comments because I felt he lacked cultural sensitivity, he became offended and proceeded to tell me how he made it a point of being culturally sensitive with all of his patients.  He also said that his reason for deterring the family member from speaking at the start of our visit was because he wanted to 'empower' the parents.  A true professional would have informed us that the parents needed to be heard from first before other family members, but that all concerns were equally important.  Instead, he berated my family member and could not accept the consequences of his own actions.  Needless to say, that was my first and last visit with Dr. Ben Gitterman.  I wasn't sure if I was being overly sensitive until I found another pediatrician who not only addressed all of my concerns, but demonstrated extreme professionalism towards me and my family.
